Mikko Tuomi | Concluding remarks from Ignas Snellen, chair of SOC and director of the Leiden Observatory. A great conference, well organised for such a massive turnout of ~800 # exoplanet astronomers. A lot to digest here, especially regarding # JWST results. # Exoplanets5
Mikko Tuomi | Day 3 of # exoplanets5 . Jupiter-mass binary objects are something weird that popped out of # JWST data just last year. Nobody really predicted them, but they exist. So did they form like stars or escape from stellar orbits after forming like planets? Did they form as binaries?
Bibiana Prinoth | Last up we have Sam Pearson on Jupiter Mass Binary Objects. JuMBOs 🐘 how suitable for this platform!!! They looked at the Trapezium Cluster a close star forming region with a looot of members with # JWST . Omg look at this pretty picture. They identified planetary mass objects in this field 🐘 and surprisingly; they found them in binaries! The problem: How do we form those? We don‘t knowww. # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | So if a system is old and in a resonance, it has been for a long time. And we can work out the formation locations. Matthew looked at some of these kinds of planets with # JWST . And I will stop here stay tuned for the upcoming paper! 🤓 # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | The target of the talk is WD 1856 b with an insanely large transit depth! We honestly still struggle a bit with the key params of this planet. Mostly we don‘t really know its mass. But it experienced a violent past through common envelope formation or high eccentricity migration. These two scenarios are not distinguishable but # JWST will/should tell us. Ryan asked not to share these results so stay tuned!! # exoplanets5 🫶
Bibiana Prinoth | After some technical issued, we‘re back with Ryan MacDonald about the first # JWST spectrum of a white dwarf exoplanet. I remember Ryan giving a talk with this title already at # ExSSV in NZ. When our sun will die one day, Jupiter and Saturn may actually survive this catastrophic event. Sooo this is also something that could/should happen in other systems. Funnily only in recent years we started finding these left over planets around white dwarfs. # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | There are plenty of questions about these planets. Are their atmospheres stretching over the entire planet? What is its composition? What is its interior? Is the magma ocean shallow or deep? To have a testbed they looked at K2-14 b during a phase curve (so all the way around). From the secondary eclipse this hints at no thick atmosphere, so they looked again with # JWST MIRI. I am not allowed to show you but stay tuned for the paper! # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | Last up before the break, we got Daniel Thorngren on his quest to „understand the mass-radius diagram as good as he possibly can“ through interior models. We heard before that interiors can be quite complicated, especially for these sub-Neptunes. So how does # JWST come in? The emission spectrum reveals a very high metallicity letting us investigate the interiors in terms of metallicity. # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | We are back for day 2 of # exoplanets5 with plenty of exciting talks 🤩 We‘ll start with a keynote by Kevin Stevenson on strange new worlds ✨ Kevin is excited to talk about rocky planets and starts with the by now well-known plot by Luque&Palle on density. There are a couple of questions we will address today from bulk densities to atmospheres and the link to the solar system. Kevin starts with showing some spectra from # HST compared to # JWST . Also, note the smoke on stage 😂

Harvard ADS: Evidence for Morning-to-Evening Limb Asymmetry on the Cool Low-Density Exoplanet WASP-107b
Bibiana Prinoth | Next up, we got Maria Steinrueck on limb asymmetries on WASP-39 b. Atmospheric dynamics tells us that considering a single transmission spectrum to hold across the entire terminator. With # JWST , we can observe this effect of having “two halves” instead of one ring. # planetsare3D is absolutely a fact and we need to check the limitations of our models. Well in any case, I am not allowed to show you the limb resolved specyra yet. Stay tuned for Espinoza+2024 and Steinrueck+ in prep. # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | Last in this session, we got James Sikora on the eccentric hot Jupiter HD 80606 b with # JWST . This is extremely interesting for me because I love eccentric planets. We expect huge temperature changes over the course of the orbit. You also expect clouds to go nuts! And ofc the chemical composition and we may be able to see it if photochemistry is present. Note to self: Tsai+2023 # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | Next up we got Calab Cañas on gems 💎 (Giant Exoplanets around M-dwarf Stars) We expect these planets to be rare because the stars are smaller, less material is available and growth is just slower. But they do exist! Why? They will observe 7 planets with # JWST to search for abundance trends for water and methane from formation. Is there a dependence/trend with metallicity? # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | We continue with Sid Gandhi on measuring isotopes in the atmosphere of VHS 1256 b, a directly imaged super-Jupiter (so a big boy close to the brown dwarf regime) with # JWST . Isotopes behave differently, as in are affected differently by photodissociation or partitioning. They detected CO in the atmosphere of this planets, with different C-isotopes in this molecule. The isotope ratios are very well constrained, putting limits on material. # exoplanets5

Bibiana Prinoth | They saw an additional IR flux consistent with a 1000-K body. This body is consistent with the leftovers from a planetary collision! Long story short, they got to look at this system with # JWST with # MIRI with a little problem. A bit of extra flux (actually a lot) from a background nebula. After some tuning.. they got a clean spectrum, but not really a left-over body so far… but also no dust? So it may be that the collision happened further out? More work is needed. # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | High C/O ratios produce large abundances of these CN bearing species (eg HCN) that are key for organic chemistry. So depending on HOW the planet got its reservoir of chemistry, the composition may vary a lot. So there is much to do, exciting times with # JWST and also # ALMA . But also from the lab. These bottlenecks have to be overcome in the hopefully near future! ✨ # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | Funnily, the inner disc looks like a mess. There is so much going on and… we don’t know why 🫠 You can get water in the inner disc in the same way as drying out the outer disc: by pebbles drifting inside the water snow line and then being released as water vapour. This is smth we can hopefully figure out with # JWST also to test how strong this drift is. This in turn also lets us study the way water is delivered to rocky planets. What molecules are available to planets beyond water? # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | Hannah highlights the work of hundreds of people in the audience and around the world. 🌍 # JWST is blowing our minds over and over again. Hannah also reminds us of the DREAMS initiative to push the limits. In particular here for WASP-17 b with the goal to understand this planet in 3D, because # planetsare3D . But also, this showcases the synergies of # HST and # JWST to understand the scattering slope in the optical. # exoplanets5
Bibiana Prinoth | Here a few of the wonderful # spectra and # highlights from the talk by @ Stellarplanet on all things gas giants with # JWST . # exoplanets5
