Stephen Sekula | Had a marvelous time at the Doran # Planetarium "Truth and Beauty" event. I was excited to be able to speak about the instruments on the # JWST and about exoplanet # WASP96b . The choral music was wonderful and it was a joy to be speaking in between selections of beautiful songs.

Bibiana Prinoth | Next up, we‘ve got Louis-Philippe Coulombe talking a reflected light and thermal emission phase curve of an exo-Neptune. Depending on the wavelength, we probe different chemistry, temperature, etc. regimes in the atmospheres of planets, see eg Jupiter. Often we need to observe at least twice or we just ignore reflected light, BUT # JWST can do both! They looked at the full phase curve of the planet LTT 9779 b, sitting in the Neptune Desert. 🏜️ And here are the light curves!! # ExSSV
Bibiana Prinoth | Good morning, my friends! We’re back at # ExSSV with some more # JWST results on beta Pictoris by Jens Kammerer. beta Pic is a famous target in our field because it was the first system with a discovered disc - back in the days. Also: the system has # exocomets ☄️ Beta Pic b was the first planet discovered in the system using direct imaging. There’s also a second one. Kammerer+ observed beta Pic with # JWST # MIRI 🤩 # ExSSV
Bibiana Prinoth | It was not last up… we’ve got one more! Last up, this time for real, we’ve got Thomas Beatty with - spoiler: NOT A FLAT LINE. Thomas starts with the challenges and questions: what do we need to know about an exoplanet to put it in a “HR diagram”. Observations for mass-metallicity plots up to now have been based on the HST WFC3 water band. But wait! We’ve got # JWST now! # ExSSV
Bibiana Prinoth | Next up, we’ve got Kevin Stevenson on charting the cosmic shoreline with # JWST . The cosmic shoreline is a dividing line separating bodes with and without atmospheres. Holy, this plot is busy! Q: can we translate this to exoplanets? This may depend on the stellar type… We’re going to hear about 5 planets. Let’s dig in! The spectrum of LHS 475 b looks pretty flat and the best fit is a flat line… # ExSSV
Bibiana Prinoth | Next up, we are going back to # direct # imaging ! Shrish Ray talks about the early release science of the direct imaging team of # JWST . There are four sub-programs: exoplanets with coronagraphy, discs with coronagraphy, spectroscopy of exoplanets and aperture masking interferometry. Imaging with # MIRI and # NIRCam clearly identify the planet. Spectroscopy with # MIRI reveals water and methane and CO, as well as silicate clouds in VHS 1256-1257 b. # ExSSV
Bibiana Prinoth | We continue with Jackie Faherty on # methane # emission in a cold # exoworld with # JWST . We start with a controversial topic: what is a planet? 🥹 Jackie works with # brown # dwarfs , and she asks us to pretend we talk about exoplanets 🤓 T and Y dwarfs are colder objects, basically Jupiters. Jackie shows us a wonderful temperature sequence - or is it? Look at the carbon chaos! There is no sequence. Welcome to the BD mess ✨ # ExSSV
