Mark McCaughrean | Well, well 🧐 # JWST was scheduled to be observing the Orion Nebula & Trapezium Cluster for me right now, obtaining spectroscopy of the candidate planetary-mass objects & Jupiter-Mass Binary Objects (JuMBOs) we discovered in our imaging ✨ But it’s not … because the observations happened earlier today already 🙂 Fingers crossed that all was successful – this is already a revisit of a failed observation & we really need these data to confirm (or deny) our hypothesis 😬🤞 # SpaceScience

Mark McCaughrean | I really shouldn’t … but the irony here is delicious 😬 The image in this tweet is one of the pair of the Orion Nebula that I made with Sam Pearson from my # JWST GTO observations, & which was released via ESA last October ✨ Images which my friends at STScI wanted nothing to do with, because we made them, not their own graphics folk, & which still don’t appear in the official JWST galleries AFAIK 🤔 And no credit is given here to me, Sam, or ESA 🤷♂️ Still, I should be flattered … I guess 🙄

Yesterday’s # JWST observations of the Orion Trapezium Cluster were successful & we now have NIRSpec spectral data for lots of brown dwarfs, planetary-mass objects, & JuMBOs 🥳 The bad? The other half of the programme the day before didn’t work 😭 That included our highest-priority targets, the longest exposure times, & extra calibration observations 😬 The guide star acquisition failed – we’re not yet sure why 🤨 # SpaceScience # Astronomy # Astrodon

Mark McCaughrean | ICYMI, the NASA/ESA/CSA # JWST spent 8 hours pointing at the Orion Nebula & Trapezium Cluster last night. We were using the European-led NIRSpec instrument to get spectra of hundreds of very low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, & planetary-mass objects. This included some of the Jupiter-mass binary objects or JuMBOs we discovered in the JWST images we took in October 2022 & released last autumn. Another 11 hours of observations start at 14:15 UTC tomorrow 🙂👍 # SpaceScience # Astronomy # Astrodon

Mark McCaughrean | These phenomena along with many others form one of the common threads through our Cycle 1 # JWST observations of star formation in Orion, HH211, & HH212. One question that often arises is that of relative scale: how big are these images & outflows compared to each other? So just for fun for those who've stuck this thread out to the end, here's a very quick & crappy montage showing how HH211 & HH212 would look if placed in the Orion Nebula, scaling for distance 🙂 Enjoy 👍
